Things haven't changed

October 7, 1984. First presidential debate

I'll tell you what I think has been the most outrageous thing in political dialog, both in this campaign and the one in '82. And that is the continued discussion and claim that somehow I am the villain who is going to pull the Social Security checks out from those people who are dependent on them.

And why I think it is outrageous -- first of all, it isn't true. But why it is outrageous is because, for political advantage, every time they do that, they scare millions of senior citizens who are totally dependent on Social Security, have no place else to turn. And they have to live and go to bed at night thinking, "Is this true? Is someone going to take our check away from us and leave us destitute?'' And I don't think that that should be a part of political dialog.  Ronald Reagan, 1984

It looks like after almost 30 years that tactics would have changed, that things would be better, that our politicians would have learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn't.

Things haven't changed.

A dear friend and I were discussing this upcoming election this morning. Neither of cares for the finger pointing and mud slinging the candidates do. Here in Indiana, we first see a TV ad for one senatorial candidate telling what a bad guy the other one is. Then we hear the same thing from the second guy about the first one. No one has said how they MIGHT be able to fix the education mess, the jobless mess, the indebtedness morass,or the healthcare brouhaha.
I received an email from a blogging friend in Pennsylvania over a week ago asking me the same question about how should we vote. All I can say is,"I'm right there with you. I don't really know for sure, myself."

Reagan was right. The political dialogue shouldn't scare the people who made this nation great.

Exactly, Cecelia.

There is a huge discussion in the Southern Baptist LinkedIn group because there are those who are appalled at voting for a Mormon... and those who are appalled at voting for the pro-choice incumbent.

I am voting for Romney because he is a good business man, and because he has exhibited high morals and good values in his life which is very unlike our current president.
